SELECTED PROBLEM
Dissolved oxygen, pitting & feedwater corrosion
Oxygen can attack vulnerable metal surfaces in the feedwater and return system, causing localized pitting.
What you may notice
Pits, leaks, elevated iron and corrosion debris in feedwater.
Possible contributors
Poor deaeration, air ingress, low feedwater temperature, variable condensate return or unsuitable scavenger delivery.
What we would review
- Measure dissolved oxygen where appropriate
- inspect deaerator temperature/pressure/venting
- feed temperature
- air-entry points
Treatment approach
Restore mechanical deaeration and limit air ingress before matching chemical oxygen removal to pressure and steam use.
Mechanism, monitoring & limitations
Mechanism
Sulfite, catalyzed sulfite and suitable organic/volatile scavenger families differ in kinetics, solids contribution and suitability. No family is universal across pressure regimes.
Monitor
Dissolved oxygen, applicable treatment residual, feed temperature, pH and transported iron.
Confirm mechanical performance, residual/oxygen control and reduced corrosion evidence over time.
Limitations
Deposits from corrosion need independent analysis; scavenging oxygen does not remove existing scale.
Exact selection and operating limits require current technical documentation and site-specific review.
Why it matters & information needed
- Why it matters
- Localized failure and transport of corrosion products into heat-transfer surfaces.
- Information needed for assessment
- Boiler type/pressure, deaerator data, return percentage, feed analysis, residual history and steam end use.
